New Here?

I’m glad you’re here.

The writing on this blog started in January 2009. Initially, a sort of evernote… before evernote. A place for me to gather my thoughts.

Beginning the Rhetorical Journey

In October 2009, I shared this post. It changed everything.

My father forwarded it to hundreds of his friends, senior business leaders. They shared. They wrote emails. I started hearing from people all over the world.

I had readers.

In the following years I kept writing. I publish 1-2 posts each week. After a few hundred posts, I got over the anxiety of publishing my thoughts. I also started sharing the ideas in videos and my YouTube channel began to grow. This video changed everything for me on YouTube.

Outside of writing and making educational videos, I am on the faculty of IESE Business School teaching Leadership Communications. I am the President of Vistage Spain, part of the world’s leading CEO coaching organisation. In these roles I have many conversations with leaders (to date I have taught more than 35,000 participants). This helps me keep the articles and videos relevant to the real challenges of business leaders and entrepreneurs today.

My TED Talk on Habits

My TEDx talk in 2012 pulled together many of the strands of thought that I had been putting together in this blog. It is a great summary of the early years of the blog, in particular the power of daily habits.

What is your Struggle right now?

There’s a parable that Socrates had a student who asked him, “How can I get wisdom?” Socrates walked him down to the ocean until they were both standing waist-high in the water. Then he grabbed the student’s head and pushed it underwater, holding it there while the student struggled and panicked. When he let go and the student stood up, gasping for air, Socrates said, “When you want wisdom as much as you wanted that next breath, you’ll get it.”

I spend most of my time learning – reading, studying, and reflecting. But I’ve been neglecting the other important part: using what I learn to create something useful.

Most of my posts have been in response to questions I get from you.

So, to get me writing again, I could use some questions. Tell me what you’re struggling with right now. Even if it’s something really small, don’t hesitate.  If you want to hear my thoughts on something, please email me a single question now.
