A Stanford Business School survey found that 51% of CEOs report using coaching. The study involved 200 CEOs of North American public and private companies.
A report from Personnel Today noted that 51% of organisations regularly use coaching services. According to the survey, coaching is being used:
- to build on good performance (23%)
- improve poor performance (20%)
- for leadership development (23%).
Why do CEOs seek Coaching?
- Clarity: CEOs often face complex decisions and value an external, objective perspective to help clarify their thinking. “It’s hard to see the full picture when you’re in the frame.”
- Leadership Development: improve emotional intelligence, and become more effective at leading teams and organisations.
- Accountability: to remain focused on goals and strategies they’ve set.
- Work-Life Balance: Leadership is a lonely experience and it can be tiring and demotivating. CEOs need help to create a work rhythm that can allow them to remain committed and engaged over the long term.
- Vision & Strategy: Get clarity on developing a vision, and help on how to share the vision meaningfully to the leadership team, and to the wider organisation.
- Self-Awareness: CEOs seek coaching to gain greater insight into their own strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots, which can improve their overall effectiveness.
- Communication Skills: Many CEOs want to improve the clarity, impact and effectiveness of their communications with a wide range of audiences.
