| Answer to: How to speak effectively to camera, during the Speaking As A Leader course | 2 Relevance | 4 years ago | Conor Neill | On Public Speaking | |
| Dear J Thank you for your question and I am glad to hear that you are doing the exercises that I share in the email course. Sometimes speaking with notes is good, sometimes not so good. A self introduction should not need notes... it is your own life you are sharing. A complex legal argument can be obviously supported with notes... the notes show that you care about important details. In practicing, initially notes will help us... but the objective is to reduce the notes down to a couple of bullet points... and then get rid of the bullet points altogether. In my courses we aim for very Simple structures - with a 3 point structure - and enough practice and repetition that you could remember the 3 key points in your sleep. For the self introduction - the eventual objective is to deliver without notes - looking at the people... Best Conor | |||||

| Answer to: How do I find my vision for post-Covid Future? | 2 Relevance | 5 years ago | Conor Neill | On Teaching | |
| Dear @billykk Tough times. Sorry to hear that your current employer is facing bankruptcy. How to find a job fast? 70-80% of jobs are found through your network. Only 20% of jobs ever make it to job boards, recruiters or public forums. How is your network? Who have you helped over the last 24 months? Who have you given time, energy, resources, ideas to help them progress? If the answer is "I don't know" then you don't have a network. It is time to begin building a real network so that in 3-5 years time you are surrounded by people who are looking out for you. Here is the summary of an article I wrote several years ago on networking: Networking in Seven Simple Steps If you don't have a network, there are job boards that I have used to hire people over the last few years: | |||||
| Answer to: Influencer | 2 Relevance | 6 years ago | Conor Neill | Book Reviews | |
| How to influence people who are more senior, more knowledgeable, more influential, more powerful... This can sometimes be easier than when you have power... as you will tend towards coercion when you can. It is quicker... but has long term negative costs. Influence requires that you show the other person or group that you deeply understand what their life is like, what their pains are, what they wish for and what they hope for. If you can become the person that helps them get clarity they will turn to you for that help. Many coaching training organisations say that a coach doesn't need relevant life experience to be able to coach someone. Often top sports coaches were not successful athletes... they are experts in coaching, not in playing. What does a good coach do? They ask lots of questions. I give a Simple framework for a coaching conversation in this video: How to have a coaching conversation. and there are lots of posts on asking better questions and on coaching others on this blog. | |||||

| Answer to: How to stay motivated through the daily grind? | 2 Relevance | 7 years ago | Conor Neill | On Leadership | |
| I have led 4 rounds of VC fund raising for companies that I have founded. I remember closing the deals and the next few days getting sucked back into day to day operations and thinking "is this it? I thought once we closed a big round, I would focus on big strategic stuff..." I closed one business because I thought "I cannot imaging spending the next 40 years of my life doing this..." I think there is a difference between a founder leader and a hired leader. As a hired leader, you have to accept that the job comes with requirements and you have to get them done. As a founder leader, I believe different rules apply. You are not being paid to do the work. Once a coach friend of mine asked me "who pays who in your company? it looks like you do all the work of motivating her and also you pay her... that seems messed up." Today I focus on what activities only I can do and that connect to my personal and professional goals. If someone on my team doesn't make me more effective and improve the quality of my life, it is them that will need to change - not me. This is not politically correct "servant leadership" stuff - I think that applies when you are hired in as a professional leader. As a founder or visionary - if you remain motivated each day for the next 20 years, you will have a successful company. If you burn yourself out in 4 years (no matter how fast you grow) you will not have a successful company. Your most important asset is your motivation. Take really good care of it. Do not sacrifice it to accelerate growth, or to have people you don't like on your team. Take really good care of your personal motivation. One daily habit that helped me - every afternoon I create a love/hate summary in my journay - on the left - everything that I have enjoyed (has added to my motivation), on the right - everything from the last 24 hours that has sucked my motivation out. And I stop doing things on the right. Some further reading on my approach to staying motivated... On Personal Resilience: but I think today's Simple answer: "Stop doing the things that suck your energy". If they are still necessary to be done, hire someone who loves that type of work. Most of the time, if you just do what you love and what you do well - people will forget about the admin stuff that you don't do so well (speaking from my own personal value system... I love conversations, teaching... I hate admin and paperwork and emails) | |||||
